Building Character

There’s been growing recognition that formal education should be just as much about building character as about imparting information and learning how to learn. I believe that the building of character begins at home but character can be nurtured in a school environment. Character is about honesty, self esteem, generosity and so many positive qualities, but how is it achieved?

It begins by being unconditionally loved at home. A school environment can encourage confidence, self esteem, and more than tolerance, acceptance, but a child should arrive in reception year (kindergarten) with these qualities in incipient form. Carefully and consistently nurtured, this becomes the foundation of strength of character regardless of race or gender. Strength of character begins at home but should be nurtured at school.
