Mental Health an NHS Priority

Today on the BBC News, MP Danny Alexander was put on the spot to identify aspects of the NHS that need improving. While expressing the opinion that the cap on GP’s salaries needs to continue, he stated the view that there needs to be more NHS funding for young people suffering with mental health issues. There is an understanding in political circles that the issue of young people suffering with mental health problems has been either ignored or underestimated on a national level.

Government statistics confirm the fact that young people suffering with mental health issues are more likely to be unemployed. More funding for the NHS that specifically targets young people with mental health issues will likely have many long term benefits not only for individuals but for the nation as a whole.

All mainstream political parties are becoming more aware of this issue and I feel strongly that while there needs to be funding for cancer research and care of the elderly, there needs to be much for funding within the NHS specifically for young people with mental health issues.
