Depression and the Immune System.

It was reported by the BBC this week that depression can be the result of an over active immune system and that a whole new approach to treating depression may be in the offing. An overactive immune system can be associated with a wide variety of disorders including skin diseases, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

What the BBC article didn’t make clear was whether an overactive immune system could cause depression. I’ve always asserted that depression is a symptom of prolonged stress, anxiety, physical shock, or sudden loss. The external stresses becomes an internal emotional state, although depression is an emotional and a physical state. I feel there may be a correlation between an over active immune system and depression, but I’m sceptical it causes depression. We’ll have to wait to see what’s proven or disproven.
