During an initial consultation recently,I was asked about my qualifications. I calmly stated what my academic foundations were and added that I had nearly a decade of experience as a therapist. This appeared to satisfy the prospective client, but then I went on the explain a little of my personal experience. I seldom offer this information initially but I need to establish trust. In this situation, by offering a little personal background I was able to convey to the prospective client that their difficulties can be understood. Direct experience made a better impression than academic qualifications and the prospective client became a client.
