The BBC reported on September 19th that some people are so overweight that in the event of a medical emergency they need a special team to remove them from their homes. The news clip showed a metal stretcher attached to a crane that extricates a person from the second floor of a building to the street below.

I was taken aback that some people can become so overweight they become prisoners in their own homes. The fact that there are now special teams to help these people get medical attention suggests the problem is real and prevalent. Obesity must not become so severe as to nearly completely incapacitate a person. We must take responsibility for our health, but we must not let a friend or family member become even slightly obese. If someone needs to be lifted from their home by specialised team, then obesity has gone too far.
